Abstract

Using hydrogen technology to split water with electrical energy is an environmentally friendly way to use energy. This project focuses on the production of hydrogen using a stack of cells with two electrodes forming an electrolyzer. A dry cell was used where the electrolyte was fed to the electrolyzer through gravity. In this experiment, various parameters influencing the production of hydrogen as oxyhydrogen gas in an electrolyzer cell were studied. These include applied voltage, current, electrolyzer temperature, and electrolyte concentration. Through the study, it was concluded that the optimum voltage of each cell of the stack needs to be between 2.0 and 2.2 volts. Also, temperatures above 60˚C provide additional overpotential due to kinetic effects and resistance, resulting in steam formation, which may accelerate electrode degradation. Furthermore, effective production of gas was observed with a 30 percent KOH electrolyte solution. These findings could be beneficial for developing the design and control mechanism of the electrolyzer.
